What is Mindful Money?

  • We are a movement to promote responsible investment
  • We’re a source of information, news and views on investing for good
  • We’re the place where you can go to choose investments that match your values
  • We provide an independent comparison of options for responsible investing
  • We provide a way for you to keep track of your responsible investments and their current value
  • Our role is to introduce you to the Kiwisaver or investment fund that suits you best. We don’t own or manage investment funds, and we don’t directly invest your money. That’s up to you and the investment provider.

    Who is Mindful Money for?
We’re for everyone! Anyone can invest in line with their ethics (and everyone should).

We recognise that good financial returns are important to most investors, as well as doing good. We let you know about the past returns and risks for responsible investments so you can make the best choices. There is growing evidence showing that, on average, investing responsibly provides returns that are at least as high, or higher than traditional investing.

    Why Mindful Money?

  • It’s absolutely free
  • We are completely independent
  • We make it quick and easy for you to find the investment that’s right for you
  • We are focused on responsible investment and we’re experts in combining good returns with doing good
  • Our platform allows you to see all your responsible investments in one place
  • We are a charity and all funds go towards improving our people and our planet
  • What’s our aim?
We aim to empower investors and make investment a force for good. Together we will switch flows of money away from pollution, exploitation and inequality towards a low emissions, sustainable and inclusive economy. We want money to serve society, not the other way around.

    How did we start?
Our founder, Barry Coates was involved in the start up of ethical investing in the UK in the early 1990s, using his experience at WWF and his Masters degree from Yale. He then went on to lead NGOs (like Oxfam New Zealand), mainstream fair trade (working with some great allies), get a few awards (like Sustainability Champion award from the Sustainable Business Network), and become a politician (as Green Party list MP in 2016-17). But he always said he would come back to make ethical investment a force for good. Now’s the time!

What’s the structure of Mindful Money?
We are part of a registered charity, Sustainable Initiatives Aotearoa #51919. We are governed by a Board of Trustees and have established an Advisory Board to provide expert advice on responsible investment issues. Members include:

  • Glen Saunders – former Chair of UN Principles on Responsible Investment, and former Guardian of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund
  • Justine Sefton – a climate change and sustainability specialist with 20 years’ experience as a lawyer, policy and regulatory adviser, UNFCCC negotiator, consultant and RI/ESG practitioner
  • Binu Paul – organiser of NZ’s annual fintech event, Finnotec, a founding member of FintechNZ, founder of Savvy Kiwi and a founder/Director of Pocketwise
  • Matthew Mimms – Managing Director of The Investment Store, Board member of Responsible Investment Association of Australasia, previously Head of Retail Sales and Service at BT Funds Management
  • How are we going to do it?
As with many charities we don’t have a huge advertising budget, so we rely on your actions to tell others, share on social media and recommend us. You’ll be thanked for it. Most New Zealanders didn’t ask questions about the corporations they supported when they signed up for their Kiwisaver account or investment fund. When they know there are choices, Kiwis want their investments to be aligned with their values. So let them know there is a place to go to find our more and switch their funds. Please tell your friends, family and work colleagues about Mindful Money.

    How are we funded?
A few generous folks are helping us by giving charitable grants to get started. Once we are up and running, we will earn fees when investors come through our platform and invest. We will use that income to build a Mindful Money Movement across NZ, and support charities who are reaching out to those who need help with financial inclusion, and those doing good work on environmental conservation.

    Who do we work with?
We are working to build a movement of all those who have shared interests in making money work for sustainability (in its broad definition). We’re reaching out to environmental NGOs, development NGOs, animal welfare groups, iwi, women’s organisations, student groups, community organisations, faith groups and social justice groups.

We’re a member of the Sustainable Business Network and the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia, and we are working with some great businesses in the financial community and beyond.
